GDPR, Personal Data and Archives in the Public Interest

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council created this archive to enable the discovery and availability of community identity, memory and history. Therefore, the materials contained on this site are considered protected under Recital 158 of the Data Protection Act 1998, Archiving in the Public Interest.

“Public authorities or public or private bodies that hold records of public interest should be services which, pursuant to Union or Member State law, have a legal obligation to acquire, preserve, appraise, arrange, describe, communicate, promote, disseminate and provide access to records of enduring public value for general public interest”.

Listed GDPR provisions do not apply to personal data processed for archiving purposes in the public interest to the extent that the application of those provisions would prevent or seriously impair the achievement of those purposes.
